Equipment

  • Small pot
  • Colander
  • Fork or chopsticks

Ingredients

In Every Pouch

  • 1 package Samyang Buldak Carbonara Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen Includes 1 dried noodle cake, 1 liquid spicy Buldak sauce packet, and 1 powdered carbonara seasoning packet.

Kitchen Basics

  • 600 ml water About 2½ cups, for boiling.

Optional Mix-Ins

  • 1 egg yolk For extra richness.
  • milk or cream A splash, for a smoother sauce and to mellow the heat.
  • shredded mozzarella or Parmesan To taste.
  • cooked bacon, ham, or leftover chicken To taste.
  • chopped green onion or sautéed vegetables To taste; use as a mix-in or topping.
  • fried egg or shredded nori Optional, for serving.

Instructions

  • Bring 600 ml (2½ cups) water to a rolling boil in a small pot. Add the noodle cake and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring halfway through, until tender but still chewy.
  • Drain off most of the water, leaving about 8 tablespoons in the pot with the noodles. Reserve a little extra hot water if desired for loosening the sauce later.
  • Over low heat, add the liquid Buldak sauce packet and stir for about 30 seconds, until the noodles are evenly coated.
  • Sprinkle in the powdered carbonara seasoning and stir until fully dissolved and creamy. If using egg yolk, milk, cream, or cheese, remove the pot from the heat before stirring them in so they do not scramble or split.
  • Serve immediately while hot and glossy. Top with green onion, a fried egg, shredded nori, or other desired add-ins.

Notes

For a thicker, less saucy bowl, leave only 3 to 4 tablespoons of water instead of 8. If the sauce is too thick or clumpy, stir in reserved hot water a teaspoon at a time. To reduce the heat, use half the spicy sauce packet and add a splash of milk or cream. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days; reheat gently with a splash of water or milk. Freezing is not recommended because the sauce can separate and the noodles can become mushy.
